A roof for a new stadium costs about $200 million, plus $6 million more to maintain each year than an outdoor stadium. In 2009, the Metrodome generated about $1.6 million in revenue from non-NFL events. If that's how much money non-NFL events generate each year, it would take over 100 years for the roof to pay for itself. Build an outdoor stadium, one that Minnesota will be proud of for years to come.

I agree with the bulk of your article - especially the Circus aspects..an incredible saga if I ever saw one..I too am a seasons ticket holder and lifelong fan...

A lot of this really has to do Zygi - he is either pretty naive or has knowledge the rest of us don't...

I am probably the only one who will support Dayton here - he has been supportive of getting a new stadium and been up front and straight with the team - he simply said - if you want a decision made this session, then the current Dome site is the only one that has a chance of that happening. The Linden site is still possible, but the church said they would file a law suit and this would be enough to stop the state from making a decision on that site during this session.

Dayton said to the Vikes - you can have Arden Hills but it means they would have to contribute $700M and the team said NO...as it stands right now, the team is still only willing to contribute 25% towards the costs of a new stadium - so the team will support the one and only existing dome site option - or at this stage of the game look at properties very near the dome to avoid playing at TCF.

Frankly I will be shocked if the team is able to pull off a new stadium whend the taxpayer (along with the NFL) portion amounts to 75%. It just won't happen here or anywhere else.

Arden Hills is the best site - The feds can pay to clean the place up - team gets the site they want along with making money on future development opportunities. Problem is Ramsey County wants to add a new 3% tax - which requires a referendum and there is ZERO chance a referendum would ever pass to support the stadium.

The NFL are not happy with the TCF stadium being used while the dome is redone..about time the NFL said something.. Instead of wasting all this money and incurring losses playing at TCF - the NFL should simply increase their loan to the Vikes from $100M to $400M - this extra $300M to be paid back interest free through a $20 surtax per ticket to repay the NFL loan. The surtax stays in place until the $300M is paid back. The team kicks in their original $300M and the State contributes what they already promised - $400M from electronic pull tabs and build it at Arden Hills - no new taxes and no complications with tribes over gambling rights. Everyone wins including those who are against a new stadium. Let Ramsey County get revenues from non Vikings events, and they can share in the operating costs of the new stadium - no new taxes and the state retains the revenues the Vikings contribute each year. I would not object paying an extra $20 per seat either.

I think the best location in the Twin Cities would be on the Minnesota river at 35W in Burnsville. There is land on both sides of the road that is mostly landfill already and the river is narrow at that spot. 35W is between Cedar and 169, so all three have access now, but access improvement would not be a challenge. 494 is not far away and the there would probably be a good view of downtown from the top of the stadium or a blimp, like there is driving north on 35W. The Airport, MoA are near by and the Minnehaha rail could be extended from the Mall, by adding a couple miles through Bloomington or along the river. I like the Shakopee idea, which made me think of this location, which would have better access and is closer to more people.

Shakopee would be an excellent site for the stadium, large space, few current owners to negotiate with, comparitive reasonable cost and it would transform our town. It's also near to Winter Park and the summer camp in Mankato.

No matter how this stadium issue ends, Kurt Zellers must be defeated in 2012 just to show Minnesotans you don't [mess] with our team the way he did and not have concequences. I can't wait until he's out along with Dave Thompson and David Hann.

I am supportive of a stadium as long as it is in Minnesota. Vikings fans need to stop arguing about sites and get behind making sure it is in Minnesota. With that being said I really do like this site.

Senjem is pro stadium and pro racino. This can be seen as nothing but good news for the Vikings and their fans.

Cory, your countdown clock on the right is wrong. The Vikings lease does not expire until February 1st, 2012 giving the team 33 more days, not 2. There are 2 days left in the season, yes, but not on the lease. I am surprised you haven't corrected this, or at least acknowledged this fact.

Hi Cory.

I live in outstate MN and only get to go to a game once a year or less. But we have a vibrant fan base that watch and support the team on TV. What I don't see, and would like to, is a fan based support system. If all of us can give a donation, would the lawmakers feel better kicking in a portion. You can count on me for $100 (or $128 in honor of Adrian)

I wish they would make the stadium outdoors. Indoor stadiums can host Super Bowls, but they don't bring in much money. Houston had a Super Bowl at their new retractable roof stadium, and event boosters said it could bring in over $330 million, but when expenses were taken off, their total profit was $913,000. Since 1982, the Metrodome has brought in $245.6 million in tax revenue. $126.2 million was brought in by the Vikings, and the remaining $11.2 million was mostly brought in by the Twins and the Gophers. A Super Bowl, some concerts, and two final fours brought in very little. At an outdoor stadium, they could host the NHL Winter Classic, which has hosted up to 70,000 fans.

I wish they would make the stadium outdoors. Indoor stadiums can host Super Bowls, but they don’t bring in much money.

Hey Cory,

This Vikings Fan from Canada's Capital applaudes your efforts to get the Vikings a new stadium and those of all the groups, websites and fans that you've mentioned. Is there anything that I could possibly do to help the Vikings chances of getting a new stadium? I have written to Governor Dayton though I don't think that is enough on my part. Do you have any other suggestions? Keep up the great work Cory! :)
